3 Ring Around the Dishtowel

Sometimes, it's the little things in life {or decorating}, that make us smile and happy, much more so than the huge things.  Don't get me wrong, when I change out the lighting in our kitchen and entryway {huge weekend project!}, the impact will most likely have me moving my bed to the cooking space, just to take in the new glimmer for moments on end, however, this little project has me almost as giddy!  And it was free because I just used something I already had in my kitchen drawer, to switch things up a bit!

Yes folks, I absolutely get excited over the biggest and littlest things, and I am definitely OK with that!

It actually started awhile back I was strolling through Pier1 and found this little precious napkin ring, that instantly stole my heart:
Sometimes, admittingly, I have an impulsive shopping problem, and when it came to my new friend here, I caved instantly.  And the weird part was, I didn't know exactly what I was going to do with it, but I knew it would be perfect somewhere in my kitchen.  So, I only bought one.  Because I already have a set of 6 napkin rings that rarely get used when entertaining, so 6 more were not necessary.  Nope, just one would be perfect, and to be used as a Napkin Ring, it wouldn't be.  When I got it home, I peaked around the room and nothing triggered the perfect spot, so into a drawer it went, to be used at a later date.

Enter this lonely dishtowel hanging over my stove handle:

Although it's already naturally adorable and the pattern takes me away daily with it's charm:

{Who knows where I am going with this?}  Isn't it sort of screaming for a little extra attention?

So, a little extra attention it got, in the form of a picture perfect napkin ring:

Yeppers, that napkin ring hugged the dishtowel like they were long lost siblings.

You know, "Brothers Gotta Hug" Tommy Boy style.  And that is just what they did:

And now we are all living happily in our newly updated kitchen space.

Crazy how something so tiny can make such a great change!  And really, it doesn't get any easier than sliding a napkin ring onto the front of the dishtowel.  So dig into your drawers, and do something a little unexpected this weekend!  Find a new use for something old, you never know the great impact to your space you could create!  Actually, it's kind of like being back in school, I am assigning you some homework, and I am hoping someone is brave enough to share their mini makeover with us!

20 February Featured Space: Kitchen - Going Green

Some of you may recall that during the Home Office featured space, I through out a couple of ideas/ways to go green.  And I also mentioned that I would try to do the same for each space I feature each month.

The reason being is that it was part of my new year's resolution list, to start living more green and take better care of this great earth we live upon.  And, now that I have a couple of absolutely amazing and fabulous blog readers, hopefully a couple of you can snag a couple of the tips and tricks as well, and together, we can find ways to reduce our carbon footprint!

And man oh man!  There are insane amounts of things that can be done in the kitchen space.  More than I could list here without creating a new record for longest blog post, but believe me, it's super easy to get boatloads of tips and tricks for going green in any space, by using my bff search engine, Google, or check out this article which also has some pretty great information!  That being said, I have to share some easy peasy lemon squeezy options, that are completely easy and do-able by anyone!

Clean Green:

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I have a small addiction to cleaning.  It's a small problem, not like Charlie Sheen rehab worthy problem, but let's just say it's not normal to see me without cleaner and a rag as part of my daily apparel.  Knowing that, over the last year, I have done everything possible to only purchase cleaners that claim to "Be Green"

I do say claim, because it had been brought to my attention that some green cleaners are really more green than others.  So, I have gotten better about reading labels closely to ensure I am doing what's right for the earth.  The one drawback is that all natural cleaners tend to run on the more expensive side, and although I bite it and do it because I know how truly harsh non-natural cleaners are for both my family and the earth, I am also recently being turned on to common household items that can also be used to get the homestead squeaky green {such as lemons!}

I have also been educating myself more on the impacts of many of the chemicals in our home, by reading through a scary but eye opening book: Squeaky Green

And let's not discount necessary second half of using the cleaners, their counterparts - dusters, rags, sponges, and mop heads.  The good news, ALL of these disposable items can now easily be replaced with non-disposable versions, call microfiber.

Yes folks, it is the cat's meow.  And not something new, but something so wonderfully good for cleaning, because you aren't filling the landfill with disinfecting wipes, sponges, duster refills and mop heads.  Oh yes, microfiber comes in all those versions, pare a rag with some dusting solution, nothing gets wood looking better!  Snag a microfiber sponge for washing dishes or wiping down bathrooms and counters, oh yes, we are really onto something now.  And lastly, when it comes to floors, I totally HEART the Method O-Mop, with a microfiber cleaning pad:

Not only does microfiber lock in dust and keep it there, it's also completely washable by just tossing it into your washer/dryer, and when it comes out, it looks like new again!  It really is a miracle cloth.

Wash Green:

On a very similar note, the kitchen floors, buffet tables and counters aren't the only things getting scrubbed in the kitchen, but equally important, are the dishes we eat from each day.  This one is an easy no brainer for me.  During the day, after each meal with the kiddos, I actually, enter gasp here, wash all of the dishes by hand.

Oh yes in deedy.  I throw on some gloves and scrub scrub scrub after each and every meal during the day.  Saves us SO much water and energy from washing the dishes through the dishwasher.

However, for those big family meals, I am not going to lie, I am a fan of my dishwasher.  It gives me more time with my family after dinner, and I can definitely appreciate that!  However, since I am a dishwasher addict, the fact that I am only running it for one meal a day, allows me to get away with only running it every 2-3 days.  Plus, I also use earth friendly dishwasher detergent and finally, I run it at night when I put the kids to bed, and open it up to let air dry over night, while the hubs and I are resting our eyes.  This saves on using the heat drying cycle.

Shop Green:

You may have noticed in the pantry reveal, a not so fancy bin of green bags resting on the floor.  This not so fancy way of shopping, is one of my absolute favorite ways to go green, literally, in the kitchen.  About a year ago, I invested in a 10 pack of green sacks from bagsontherun.com.  A little skeptical at first about the whole green bag thing, the second I received my little buddies in the mail, I was SOLD!  These bags hold an AMAZING amount of groceries, like up to 22 lbs of them!  And here are some scary facts for all of you to munch on {courtesy of bagsontherun.com}
  • The petroleum used to make 18 plastic bags could drive a car for 1 mile?
  • The EPA estimates that it takes a plastic bag over 500 years to decay in a landfill?
  • The average person's plastic bag legacy will be 4.175 million years?
  • The worldwide consumption of plastic bags is over 500 billion, over 1 million per minute?
So, I took my new found friends, and put them into a nice little lidded bin like so:

And every time that we go shopping, into the trunk goes the bin.  And yes, we even fill that up too, when the bags are full, or for carting out jugs of juice or cleaners.  Waste not!

And of course the bags don't just get used for groceries, they are also great for long car trips/vacations or for trick or treating!

These days, there are a lot of fancier pretty options from envirosax.com or containerstore.com, or you can even find them at just about any grocery or department store.  At any rate, there is no longer any excuse not to use these amazing multi-tasking earth savers.

Eat Green:

Another endless subject, but there is so much you can do in this department as well!  And I am not just talking about eating completely organically {bowing to those of you that do, I am not there yet, but getting closer year after year}.

First way we started eating more green, and saving mucho moola, was by planting our first veggie garden last year!  No green thumb needed either; it was surprisingly easy to do!  Last year we successfully grew onions, peppers, tomatoes, celery, herbs and leaf lettuce, and plan on doing the same plus, this year!

Nothing is better then freshly grown veggies straight from your garden!  Delish!
Aside from eating green from a technical perspective, there is also a lot of things you can do to be green when preparing foods!

First, eating at home is a lot more green than eating at fast food restaurants.  The amount of waste created from grabbing food on the go, is quite insane.  And for you coffee on the go individuals, snag some reusable travel mugs and cups:

These days you can get kinds that work great for both iced and hot coffee, and I haven't found a coffee joint yet that won't be happy to fill up the personal cups vs. giving you ones that later end up taking up space in a landfill.

And as far as cooking at home goes, this year we received an amazing Christmas gift, that is actually helping us green up in a little way:
Yeppers, this bad boy is a multifunctional cooking machine, both a rotisserie and toaster oven in one.  And how is this "green" you ask?  Well, this little puppy uses far less energy than our oven, and can definitely hold tons of food to feed our huge family of five!  Pretty amazing!
And when we do use the oven, a couple of things do help, like shutting your oven/burners off early, and letting the already built up heat, finish cooking the food.  And when using the oven, I cook everything inside at once vs. one thing at a time.
And when baking, to preserve the cookie sheets, vs. lining the cookie sheet with tinfoil, I found you can actually get these totally reusable nonstick baking tray liners.  And they are GREAT!

And for lunch on the go or for school:
Reusable Lunch Bags, Totes and Boxes are far better than brown bagging it.
And even better yet, we have found using these little guys, are great for using less sammy baggies:

And such an obvious one, like think Britta commercial obvious:

Instead of using bottled water, snag yourself a water pitcher with a built in filter, or add on to your faucet, or use that fancy water from your fridge door.  Whichever you choose, this route is much better for the environment than bottled water.  So snag a reusable water jug for each family member, and fill 'em up at home before hitting the road to that soccer game or jog around the lake.

Another obvious one is food storage:
Opt for storing leftovers in good quality food storage containers vs. those couple time use containers that end up getting tossed after filling them up with spaghetti sauce.  Oh, and a quick tip for keeping your plastic food storage containers looking brand spanking new after storing a red sauce, hand wash the container in soapy ice cold water.  So far, it's been a no fail solution for us folks!

And remember my snack storage suggestions?  Buying in bulk is much more green than buying individually wrapped items, and even greener, is re-using the storage bags that you divide your snacks down to.  They even have these cool devises made specifically for drying your sammy bags:

Live Green:

Yep, I said it.  I either say Live Green or Recycle Recycle Recycle!  Either way, think about each thing you are tossing away.

And these days, there are so many great storage options when it comes to recycling.  Broken record or not, IHeart using these baskets in tons of rooms in my home for papers:

And for all other kitchen recycling {cans, glass, cardboard, etc...}, we have a recycling bin tucked under the sink, that pulls out easily for access:

And to get your little munchkins excited to help with organizing, check out this book from your local library, they will be sure to HEART it and learn a lot about keeping our planet green: Michael Recyle

It's amazing what my little sponges of knowledge can tell me about what I should recycle, I actually laugh that they are constantly on "Recycle Patrol" and I couldn't be more proud of that fact!

Lastly, something I haven't done yet, but have full intentions of starting in the kitchen, is a counter top compost:

And because I also resolute to spend less this year, I am going to attempt to make a homemade DIY compost for the kitchen, vs splurging on a spendier version.  And the benefit will be that I will have amazing soil for this year's veggie garden and creating less landfill waste at the same time.  Gotta love two for ones!

So there you have it!  Now it's your turn!  Anyone else resolute to be more green this year?  What are you doing around the kitchen to green up, and what else can I do that I didn't mention above?  I would be gratefully joyous to hear what you have up your green sleeves as well!

2 Marching into March!

Happy month of March everyone!  I am so eager for spring to come {on March 20th!}, that with the new month, I decided to snag a bouquet of tulips from the grocery store... and they couldn't have made my kitchen table feel more bright and fresh!

I actually split the bouquet into two halves, each in a large Kerr canning jar, and flanked them on each side of a platter and bowl of fresh fruits.

It's been so long since I have had live fresh flowers in the homestead, words can't explain how they brightened me from the winter blues.

From this moment on, I vow to never be fresh flowerless again.

57 February Featured Space: Kitchen - Pantry Reveal

Ok ok!  So I know it's March already, however I still have a couple of Kitchen posts to wrap up, so bare with me until we transition to our March featured space, Kid's Spaces.

And I must beg for forgiveness now, I think this post will go down as one of the longest in history, Guinness Book style!  So sorry for the information overload, I am super hopeful that it's worth it!

At the beginning of February, because the Kitchen space was my featured monthly space, I decided that I was going to undertake a project of my own within my kitchen.  And you have all been hearing about it in bits and pieces, from the new bag I "No Sewed" together to hold chip and bread clips, to the uber awesome pantry necessities for keeping the space ultra tidy and the food ultra fresh!  Yes, I was going to do a major pantry project!

So why a pantry makeover you ask?  Well, for a couple of reasons.  As in any organization project, it's so important to do things that make your space work better for you, and your daily life.  And although my previous pantry was so super organized, my kitchen was not functioning to what I thought it's full potential was.

You see, we currently have two closets within our kitchen, one smaller one that goes floor to ceiling and another that is more of a half a closet.

The floor to ceiling closet started out like this:

We originally used this closet as a place to hold our garbage can and cleaning supplies.
Our pantry, as I mentioned earlier, was a very organized and functional space:

And the closet, is actually only half a closet really, because our stairs to our lower level, go right underneath it, cutting it in half.

So where did our coats live?  Great question actually, glad you asked!  Well, our house was originally built negative a coat closet.  That's right folks, no place for the coats and shoes and hats and mittens and backpacks and umbrellas, to call their home.  Lesson learned, we will NEVER own another home minus a coat closet.  So, with no coat closet, all coats and boots would pile up here {this photo was taken on a good day}:

The remainder of our outerwear is tucked away in a spare bedroom closet, causing us to have to walk through the whole house to grab outdoor goods.

So, again, some fairly organized living was happening here, but I was actually dealing daily with a few problems with this situation:

1.  The coat hook area by the back garage door, became a dumping zone for backpacks, boots and outerwear, causing the area to quickly become extremely cluttered and crowded.

2.  The fabulous closet holding our garbage can and cleaning supplies, seemed like a ton of wasted storage space, screaming to be used.  Only problem, where to put the garbage can?  It was too big to add to the coat storage mess by the garage!  Plus, our doggy dishes lived over there also:

3.  The biggest problem I had with how we were using our closet space, was that I was walking clear across my dining room, anytime I was in need of some noodles or cereal or making lunches:

And although the picture makes the pantry closet look like it's only a few feet away, it was literally 13 walking steps away from the counter I prepare food at {26 steps round trip}.  And as you can see, the garbage closet, is a mere 3 walking steps away.  Total nonsense!

Therefore, it was time to switch things around, here was the new plan:

Yep, we were going to move ALL of that stuff from our original pantry cabinet, to the taller, skinnier, garbage holding one.  And then we were going to make a coat closet out of the once pantry.  And the garbage can you ask?  Well, with us moving all of the coats and boots away from the coat hooks by the garage entrance, and purchasing a more slim garbage can, we were able to move it out of the closet to it's new home next to the garage door:

It fits oh so perfectly, as good as OJ Simpson gloves!

So moving the garbage can was the first successful step.  And the rest was pretty easy as well!

Now, as with majority of home projects and organization projects, things had to get ugly before they got better.  For two days, we lived like this:

That is the entire contents of two cabinets, all living on our kitchen table.  It's all about making sacrifices, and if that means living off of a kitchen table for two days, then it's so worth it!

So, now with our cupboards all empty, we started to make them what we needed them to become.  It was transformation time!

We started out by digging out leftover shelving from our storage room, that we still had from when the home was built.  What a huge $$ saver!  We also took out the extra shelving from the original pantry turned coat closet, and used that as well to create more storage in the then garbage closet.

Something else worth mentioning, although I don't have photos of it before, was that we had lined the lower half of the garbage closet, with glossy ceiling tiles, for easy garbage cleanup when food splattered on the walls.  And of course once you apply those to the wall with a strong adhesive, taking it down would cause total wall repair, so we opted to actually just finish the closet with more panels, all the way to the ceiling for a more unified look.

Here is what the new pantry cabinet looked like with floor to ceiling shelving, and floor to ceiling wall panels:

TONS of storage space was just created, and I was in kitchen heaven.  Well, almost, I still had a table full of stuff to deal with!

Oooh ooh oh, as you can see from the snapshots above, I had purchased this over the door storage system:

And although I was good at measuring the door dimensions, I wasn't great at considering I would have a big ol' door knob in the way.  But, waste not, I will show you what we ended up doing with the two larger storage baskets shown at the bottom of the unit.  The top part fit just perfectly, giving us so much extra pantry storage.  So, split into two pieces this organizer was.

While my amazingly wonderful hubster was assembling the new pantry, I was busy working on the new coat closet.  As I mentioned, we had removed most of the old pantry shelving to reuse in our new pantry space, leaving the new coat closet, looking like this:

Ok, so we actually removed ALL of the shelving.  For a minute.  So I could patch all the shelving holes and give the closet a fresh coat of paint.  Then, back in went one shelf for hanging coats {and holding all of our cleaning supplies, up far out of little finger's reach}:

And waste we did not.  Here you can see where we added the remainder of the over the door storage baskets, that didn't fit around the pantry closet door knob:

Right into the coat closet they went, to be used for all sorts of goodness, like holding hats and mittens and lunch boxes and umbrellas!  Fabuloso!

So, with all the assembly portion of the makeover, now complete, it was time for all of the real fun!  Filling up the two new storage spaces!  This didn't take more than a couple of minutes, although, it was somewhat of a puzzle making sure that things were easily reachable, and making sure I put things back in places that made sense to our daily routine.

Once all of the food was put back, our new pantry looked like this:

Remember the before:

And the After:

Here is a quick breakdown of what happened -

Canned goods were corralled in the new over the door storage baskets:

Extra boxed goods were stashed way up on the very top shelf.  These are items that are un-opened and not used since all items used daily are stored in special air tight containers:

The second shelf down, below the boxed goods, is additional canned goods and rice.

The hub of the closet contains all of our breads, dry foods, noodles and snacky foods:

And you can't forget the pooches, we actually stored their puppy bones in the pantry as well:

And down on the floor there:

Extra bottled juices and waters tucked away wonderfully.  And there is also stack-able baskets filled with veggies and a bin with our green shopping bags.

So fabulously functional, I could scream it from the rooftops!  I am in pantry love!

And did you notice something hanging from the inside of the door?  Yes my friends, that is our weekly shopping list, waiting to be filled out as soon as something runs low/out:

It's hanging from a clipboard that conveniently matches my clip bag:

Nothing like pantry harmony!

Oh!  And the absolute best part!  Location was a huge plus, the total main reason for the switcharoo project, but we also created SO much extra kitchen shelving and storage by going to the new closet and snagging some over the door storage, that I was able to completely empty a full lazy susan, into the new closet!

Can you say wowzers?  I mean, it's so great having so much space to work with!  Now I can start giving pots & pans and appliances more breathing room within their personal spaces as well!

And not to forget about the awesomeness that is the new coat closet!
The updated closet space now keeps cleaning supplies tucked away from kids, holds outerwear accessories in special baskets, gives shoes a place to take a rest, hangs purses and jackets and offers a personalized space for the kiddos to keep their items for "on the go".

Backing up a bit, check out how perfect these baskets are for lunchboxes and mittens!  Match made in heaven:

And my purses are hung by a simple "S" shaped shower curtain hook {the rest of the hooks are "hanging out" in my bedroom closet, holding all my other purses}:

The newest addition to the closet, to ensure no space went to waste, was three photo boxes, that up until now, were going unused.  I popped in some labels in the fronts, that included each kiddo's name, and lined them up under the shoe rack:

Now this is what I call convenience.  Each kid has their own outbox, perfect for storing everything from library books to school supplies to everything in-between.  And if we need more shoe storage, these boxes also stack nice and neat, clearing up extra space for the items that cover our feet!

Once the jackets are hung, this multi-functional closet still boasts tons of extra space and so many storage options!  This gal couldn't be more pleased!

No more cluttered coat mess by the backdoor.  Check.  No more walking clear across the kitchen just to make a quick sandwich.  Check.  Extra storage space.  Check.  Easy peasy garbage access.  Check.  Seriously, the total time invested is so worth the outcome, and will be gained back before I can say, "super snazzy kitchen pantry switcharoo project, complete!"

Oh happy day.  I can't wait to hear what you guys think!  Anyone organize spaces within their own kitchens this month?  If so, can you spill the details?  Whether it was a utensil drawer or an entire kitchen transformation, I would love to know what went down in your homesteads, and hear about the amazing outcomes!

See how our pantry looks painted!

And how we have since transformed our coat closet:
