123 Seeing Stripes in the Dining Room!

While we wait for our schedules and the weather to align to get those finishing touches done in the backyard, I got ants in my pants and jumped all over a different project I have been wanting to do for awhile now.

Stripes.

In the dining room.

Love.

Let's rewind though.  Sometimes I get really excited and work in random ways.  Last year we painted the wall down our stairs with Glidden's Smooth Stone, and I instantly fell head over heals in love with the color, and knew right then and there that it would be the new color of our adjoining kitchen/dining area.  We have giant dreams and plans for kitchen updates, and painting the walls is just the tiniest piece of those ideas.

Our dining area is attached to the kitchen and also to the living room, here is a quick reminder of the room.

I love a lot of what is going on already, but in all honesty, I have grown tired of the brown on brown on brown walls and furniture.  The Smooth Stone greige has gray undertones, which will allow me to play more with color within the other finishes.  It is also a much lighter and brighter tone than the Behr Teepee and Behr Belgian Sweet that is currently on the walls.

And stripes!  I wanted big bold stripes.  I am a stripe addict when it comes to anything and everything {my work tote, clothing, curtains, rugs and walls}.  I love that stripes are classic yet playful and make a statement.

We already had the gallon of Smooth Stone on hand from the stairs, so this project was just a quick trip to home depot for a quart of the stripe accent color; I selected Martha Stewart's Picket Fence.

For now, I am just giving my attention to the focal wall of the dining room and the hallway.  The darker color will stay for now, but ultimately will go as well.

Here you can see the difference in colors.  I started out by painting the entire focal wall and hall in the Smooth Stone paint.

Everything instantly felt a thousand times brighter and happier.  I am such a fan.

Once I had the walls coated, I called in my measuring man.  I told him that since the wall was so tall, that chunkier stripes is what I was after.  So instead of our standard 12" stripes {like we did in the boy's shared bedroom}, we went with 16" stripes instead.

Bryan started by measuring from the trim up the wall, 16 inches and making small marks with his pencil.  Then he connected his marks with tape, and repeated the same steps all the way up the wall.

Once the tape was on the wall, I used my brush and went over the edges of the paint with the same Smooth Stone that was beneath the tape.  This is what creates a super smooth line when the tape is pulled from a textured wall.

Here is the beginning of the Picket Fence color going up.

I started by using my brush to trim out all of the trim, outlets, and edges.  Then I rolled the rest.

Even though Smooth Stone is pretty light, I still needed to do two coats of the Picket Fence over the top.

When it finally came time to pull the tape, I got the happiest tingles ever.  Something about seeing that perfect straight line... sigh...

This is right after the tape is pulled.  The paint was still wet from the second coat of paint, but I always try and pull the stripe tape when the paint is wet.  It prevents the paint from peeling off of the wall.  And you get a complimentary messy table along with those beautiful stripes.

Once the paint was dry, we placed everything back and just gazed.....

The stripes not only made the dining area lighter and brighter, but they also seemed to make the ceilings feel even taller.

And those glorious stripes.  They make the prettiest backdrop to the buffet, shelf and accessories.

The flowers in the green pitcher are from a large bush in front of our home.

I purchased a few accessories for the area, but it still has a little ways to go.  The starburst mirror was this one from Home Depot for $35, and it was the perfect size for the space.  The larger mirror I had DIY'ed previously will be moved to another spot in the house where it is scaled a bit more appropriately.

The small art print is a card from Etsy, and it's a saying we giggle about here, since we love to believe that it is true.

I added an oldie IKEA lamp to the table to offer some night light in the area for little boys who roam in the night to the potty.  All of the other accessories were snagged from around the home.

All in all this super simple little stripe project really got me excited for what is to come in the kitchen space.  They really smile at you when you walk in, and you can't help but smile back.

Here is the oh-so-happy before and after shot.  Wowza!

SO much better!

As you can see above, I took down the white curtains.  I am seeking out something with oodles of color, or even just an awesome bold pattern.  I haven't found the perfect solution, yet, but I will be sure to share when I do {it could be that I stencil the white panels or sew up something new out of amazing fabric}.  I also may end up tossing a bold color on the buffet.  We still have the beautiful wood table and hope to put in darker wood floors down the road so that would be a lot of wood tone going on.  Only time will tell what this "spur of the moment" gal will do next!

  1. I LOVE those stripes! We just moved into our new house and I am hesitant to paint any walls because I am not the best painter, but I may need to find at least one wall to try some stripes on. Your tutorial makes it seems doable.

  3. I have to ask since I see them in your pictures all the time... Do you actually drink Pellegrino or what ever brand of mineral water that is or do you just like using it as an accessory? Every few years I try mineral water thinking this time I will like it and every time I end up pitching it cause I can't get past the taste.

    1. I actually really do enjoy it. I found the key is adding a little flavoring or lemon. It is the only way I have been able to cut soda out of my diet. :)

    2. I had to laugh, CRE, because I just had a conversation with a friend about how all designers seem to display Pellegrino! I too, have found mineral waters the only way I was able to [almost] get rid of sodas. I used to loooove the Diet Dr. Peppers on a multi-daily basis. I started by mixing the water with juice, but started putting on a few pounds and then discovered Perrier's flavored mineral water. No calories, no sweeteners...just a hint of citrus.

  5. Looks great! I painted thick gray stripes in my dining room last year and still love the way they look. Our dining room is next to the entryway so visitors notice the accent wall right away and always comment on how great it looks. You can never have enough stripes!

  7. Love the stripes! I'm working on a bathroom for my daughter...navy walls with one white stripe around for a nautical look.
I'm having a heck of a time getting that line really crisp w/ no bleed through! I just took the tape off last night and still have some places it bled. Back to the drawing board! Anyway, can't imagine doing as much as you did!
    Any tips?

    Thanks! Love your blog!

    1. Hi Jan!

I have found that sealing the tape is the best solution to prevent the bleeding paint. Always place a thin coat of the under color over the edges of the paint before painting your stripe with the new color. That should do the trick! :)

    1. Hi Alexa!

The sealing of the tape is the biggest tip to achieve those crisp lines. I also like Scotch Blue Edge Lock painters tape, or the Green Frog Tape.

Step 1: Paint the wall main wall color.
Step 2: Measure and tape lines.
Step 3: Use main wall color again to seal the tape edges. Let dry.
      Step 4: Paint stripe color.
Step 5: Peel tape while stripe paint is still wet if possible.

Following those simple steps will give you perfect and crisp lines every time. I have done it on orange peel walls twice now and have been left impressed both times. :)

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

We are planning a trip (it's not THAT far, but far enough to have to plan it out) for Sept. She is going to help me do some painting here first, and then off for accessories. I have a pitcher that is almost like that, but I don't like the color. I am thinking of trying to spray paint and then add stripes? We will see!!

  39. I have an idea... Why don't you try taking your white curtains (woohoo for recycling) and dip dying them using 2 or even 3 of your favourite colours (it's very easy to do in your washing machine with some rubber bands and a couple boxes of dye!). It'll certainly be a dramatic pop of colour and a real statement piece for your beautiful dining room. Plus, it continues the theme of stripes but in a not so matchy matchy kinda way! :)

  42. Our living/dining areas are teepee and belgian as well. Would love to get rid of so much brown but a switch to grays would mean new rugs and pillows as well which is not in the budget. Do you new colors look more beige or gray? Our living room has dark brown leather furniture a mix of different wood tones for tables, the rug is a dark beige with cream greek key accent and the pillows range from brown prints with chartreuse and hints of turquoise. I'm wondering how those colors would work. Would love to lighten up our dark room!

    1. I think the lighter Smooth Stone greige would still work great. In fact, we have a large dark brown leather sofa downstairs and once we start painting the rest of the walls Smooth Stone upstairs, I am thinking of bringing up the leather couch to pair with it. :) The great thing about a nice gray-beige color is that it goes with just about everything. And it really depends on the lighting. Our hallway is reading really gray, however, we have natural light streaming in from bedrooms done in gray and blue hues. In the dining area is reads more beige, however, it is surrounded by wood tones and darker brown walls.

      Hope that helps!

    2. Okay, this may sound like a really stupid question, but if you seal the edges of the tape with paint, how are you going to see where the edges are to paint the stripe color? (As I'm sure you can tell I am a beginner):)

      Delete
    3. Not a silly question at all. You just have to seal the edges of the tape, so I just use a brush and don't cover the entire piece of tape. If you look a the photos above in the post, you can see that the tape was already sealed. You only have to seal the side you will be painting the new color.

Hope that helps a bit more.

  72. I love the wide stripes! Will you do that on my walls? 😁

  73. I would never have thought of doing this in my home but I can't stop opening this link to look at it again and again. Now I'm eyeing our dining room wall, wondering if I could make it work like you did, but with some shade of cream for the stripe, not white. Hmmmm....

  74. Opinion question...my whole entire house is painted builder tan...I'm over it. But I'm not sure I'll live here more than another year, maybe two. I am willing and want to put my own personal decor touch to make the house more unique and sellable but I can't possibly repaint the whole house. How/where do I begin/focus on doing this? The house is two levels, 4000sf. I just can't decide on WHERE to start painting because I'm afraid if I do one space I have to do all the others. Any advice? I've obviously personalized certain bedrooms but not main areas/hallways etc. We have cherry wood cabinets/tan walls and it all just look so cookie cutter/builder blah...but I'm at a loss for where to begin.

  76. I love it! I honestly don't know how you do it. I already think your home is stunning and you always seem to find ways to make it even more stunning! What I wouldn't do to borrow your eyes in my home for a little while... ;) Beautiful, beautiful transformation, Jen! I am excited to see the rest of your plans unfold!

  78. Hi Jen. This look fabulous. I think you've totally convinced me to go ahead with an accent wall I've been wanting to do forever!

It goes to show that you don't have to use a paint color that's already in the room, two different colors can coordinate just perfectly.

    Look amazing!

  79. I love it! I have a dining room wall that is 17' long (standard 8' ceilings)and am wondering if I should do horizontal stripes or vertical stripes. The thought was the vertical may bring more height to the room?! Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks for all your inspiration.

  80. The lighter wall color and stripes really brightens up the dining room and just overall makes it look bigger.

  81. Wow! I thought it looked great before, but the after is even more beautiful. I'm a stripe addict too so I'm a bit biased. <3 it!

  82. It definitely brightens up the room. I love it! It's crazy how often you change up the decor and everything around your house. Do you buy new decor all the time, or do you just switch them from room to room?

    1. I watch for sales and clearance items when it comes to decor, and it's funny how introducing one thing, often times causes a ripple effect and things suddenly are shifted and moved throughout the entire home. I love moving things around to keep things interesting, and have been having fun finding versatile things that will work in most areas of our home. Since I am a Target lover, I have started scoping our local Goodwill since they typically have all of the overflow items at a fraction of the cost.

  83. Jen I love this update! The stripes are gorgeous. I was wondering where you got the gold lantern/ candle holder (the one with the blue pillar candle). I thought I had seen something similar at Target, but when I went in search for this item specifically I could not find it.

    1. It was a Target find, they recently had them on Clearance. I would run to your nearest Goodwill, since that is where Target clearance items head after the store kicks them off of the shelves. :)

  84. Love the update! Such a great idea! I was wondering where you got the shelf and wine racks. I have been wanting to do something similar but was concerned about adding too much weight.

  85. Where did you get that lovely wine glass holder above the buffet hutch?

    1. Hello! The white shelf is a LACK shelf from IKEA and the wine rack installed to the shelf is from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000H0SEP6/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/182-8203630-1424904?camp=213689&creative=392969&link_code=btl&tag=iheaorga-20
