33 UHeart Organizing: A-Tisket, A-Tasket, This Honey Loves A Good Basket!

Raise your hand if you are addicted to baskets....

Wow, that is A LOT of hands going up around the world!  Seriously, it is a weakness isn't it?

Of course I love baskets because they solve 99% of my organizing problems.  And they are so pretty!  Have a stack of papers on the counter?  Throw them in a basket!  A pile of flip flops by the front door?  Throw them in a basket!  Messy blankets on the couch?  You got it, a basket!

Megan from Honey We're Home, is here today to share more details about her basket addiction, and how they are keeping her nice and organized all over her beautiful home!

Sometimes I have to laugh at how many baskets I'm sure we have at our house, I've never counted, but I'm sure at a store it would be good idea to have someone follow me around so they could warn, "Ma'am, step away from the baskets!" In my defense, baskets are so good at corralling things together and there are so many cute ones to choose from these days.  I use them to organize everything - toys, shoes, books, and clothes.

In our mudroom, I use dark baskets that happen to fit perfectly under our bench seat.  I found these at Target for about $20, kind of expensive when you're purchasing multiples, but we've had them 3 years and I consider them an investment.  They are sturdy and hold our shoes.

In the living room, extra large baskets hold my sons toys to give them a place to go at the end of the day.  I tied homemade laminated labels to the baskets so my three year-old would know what goes where.

For purely decorative purposes, basets add texture and warmth to a space.  Throw a pillow or blanket in for added coziness.  I've seen similar baskets at Home Goods.

In the sitting room, the baskets are pretty much only decorative to fill in the open spaces in the built-in cabinet and the bottom right basket hides the television and cable box cords.

A smaller round basket can hold things like remote controls.

Wire baskets are great for storing magazines in the kitchen.  I've seen them at The Container Store and See Jane Work website.

I keep my son's little board books in a wire basket too.

In the master bedroom and guest room, I like to keep magazines on hand and typically put them in a basket to keep them organized.

I love this shallow one where I can fan all the magazines out to see what I have.

Would you dare count the number of baskets in your house?

"My name is Megan and I am a lawyer by day, design and decor lover by night, and Mama to the sweetest 2-year old boy you've ever seen. I'm passionate about fitness (and chocolate!) and could not live without my relationships, girl talk, and my morning coffee. I've been blogging for two years over at Honey We're Home, sharing my love of keeping things organized and beautiful at our house.  My efforts to live in the moment and cook more are an adventure in progress."

  1. I love baskets. I have millions. Well....ok maybe not.... yet. I use a wicker basket used to hold utensils on the coffee table for remotes. I plan my decor around the baskets. Shall we start a 12 step program? Teri

  6. I therefore declare myself a basket addict ;) can't stop browsing this section in a home store. I like to use baskets for different purposes which they are not originally intended for!

  9. Megan,

I'm actually one who can honestly say, "I need more baskets. Baskets would solve a lot of my household problems." But baskets aside, my favorite part of your post was just being able to gaze at photos of your utterly beautiful home! What a pretty and calm dwelling place you have set up for your family! So inspiring!

  11. I LOVE baskets but I have a hard time finding them at a reasonable price. $20 a basket is just too much for a basket

    1. I know what you mean. I love baskets, especially my most recent buys from crate and barrel in my kitchen, but they were almost 20 each too! I find ikea the cheapest, but I still try to avoid my home looking like an ikea catalog...

    1. I love thrift stores! You can find just about ANYTHING! Why buy a basket for $15 when you can get 7 for the same price?

  14. I also meant to say that for a lawyer you are very organized. I live with one and organization is NOT his strongest side. :)

  20. When we moved last year I collected all of the baskets from around our house, and WOW. I knew I had a problem, but it is humbling to see it all in one space. Then I had to decide which baskets to bring with us and which baskets to leave in storage. We are living in Europe in furnished housing right now. I am so glad I opted to bring a lot of them with us, but it always seems like we could use more.

  21. My hand was up too! West Elm/Potter Barn *finally* opened in Sydney today and I snagged a wire basket from West Elm Market - I love it! But I agree with Anneke - thrift shopping is great for finding containers and baskets. I snagged some fabulous 'locker style' metal tins at my local St Vincents - http://heartsoulfamily.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/hey-mackelmore-thrift-shop-score.html

Loving your fabulous entry way/mudroom organization station!

  22. My hand went up high and fast!

I am so addicted, and I never realised...but they do so many things.

I like the idea of hiding the TV, Cable, etc (DVD player) cables. You have made me think - Yeah, Go get that open storage unit for tv...shop at home first, to find just the right size basket for the cables or go shop for a new one ;-)

Thank you for the inspirational pictures.

  24. Everyone should have baskets, but yes, when buying in multiples they can get expensive! But if you plan correctly and know exactly how many you need and what you will be storing the expensive is more justified. I always try have them add to the decor as well. I use them a lot in my nursery designs, where storage baskets are a must have. You can check out my blog post in storage in the nursery too:

  25. I became a Longaberger Consultant just to feed my basket habit. I'm not really "running" my business, just staying active so I can buy MORE BASKES at a discount. I like Peterboro, too...made in the USA and nice. But I'm not a basket snob. I see one I like, no matter where it is, I snap it up. Much to my husband's dismay......

  26. We just moved a couple months ago and I ended up corralling all baskets and bins to pack together. My husband couldn't believe the amount since they were so neatly stored around the house- in the office, closet, bathroom, under the coffee table. Stacking them within each other I think I fit them all in two LARGE moving boxes. We're currently renovating our new home but when it comes time to unpack, I know I'll be reaching for those boxes labeled "all our baskets and bins!"

  27. Decorating with wicker baskets is one of my favorite decorating things! They look nice just about anywhere as long as you don't overfill them.
