104 IHeart FAQs

IHeart Organizing Frequently Asked Questions:

How did you get started blogging?
I have always loved journaling and being an over sharer, and when I started staying home full time with the kiddos, it was a creative outlet for me to provide some home and organizing tips.  I just decided one day, "I love reading blogs, I should write one too!".  It was basically for friends and family {and an enjoyable outlet for me to focus on in my few spare mommy seconds} and it began to grow through word of mouth and some sweet features.  When I started blogging back in the fall of 2009, I never would have imagined I would be doing it full time someday.  It's been a pretty surreal experience and I have to pinch myself daily to see if I am dreaming.  You can find more details and some additional thoughts on the subject in an oldie post here.

Who designed your blog?
That would be yours truly.  The header and sidebar are basic fonts and graphics that I created using my minimal Photoshop knowledge.  I used a simple Blogger template which I modified with my own images and by using the customization tool within the blogger program.  Everything on the sidebar is added through a "widget" that is offered by blogger {for example; pictures, html, followers, etc...}.  The good news is that Blogger is pretty simple to update and modify without knowing much {or any} coding.  The bad news is that my site has been very "laggy" and I have zero clue as to why.  So, while I look at my hosting and design options for the future of IHeart Organizing, I have heard that many of the browsing issues happen within Internet Explorer and that the blog is much more pleasurable when being viewed with Firefox or Chrome browsers.

What kind of camera do you use?
My current camera is a Canon Rebel XSi.  The two lenses I use most frequently for the blog are the Canon kit 18-55 mm lens and the Tamron 28-75 mm lens.  I also love my little nifty fifty lens.  You can read more here.

What kind of software do you use to make your printables?
I use Microsoft Office 2010 to create all of my labels and printables.  Majority of the items are created using Microsoft Excel, however, I just recently began dabbling in Publisher and I am really enjoying the ease of that program as well.

I can't download your free binder kit, what's the deal?
I am sorry sweet friends.  The binder downloads were free for one month only, as a special promo while I was working on the project with my readers.  They are now available in my shop and are one of the primary ways I am able contribute to supporting my family, so I appreciate your understanding in regards to the expired free trial.  I do offer a variety of free printables, which you can find here, and hope to continue to expand that feature in the future!

How do you make the letters in your graphics alternate in color?
It's a manual and tedious thing.  One letter at a time people, one letter at a time....

What do you do now that you're not a daycare provider?
It is absolutely crazy to believe that I retired from being a daycare provider to become a full time blogger, however, that is the sweet fact.  My youngest son is in half day 4K this year, so I still have a lot of time devoted to being "mom" by day and blogging at night or during the few hours that all of the kidlets are in school during the afternoon.  Along with being an at home mom, I now make a living by running the blog, running an Etsy shop, answering questions and emails, projecting, working with friends and family on their spaces, contributing to BHG.com, designing printables and labeling anything I come in contact with.

Where did you get your laundry room rug?
The source for the infamous laundry room rug is Urban Outfitters.  You can find all of our home product sources by allowing our Home Tour Page to load completely, and then hovering on each photo over the object you are interested in tracking down. {fyi - this functionality is temporary removed, however, I hope to enhance it in the near future}

Where can I find a floor plan of your house?
The Home Tour Page now includes the upper and lower level floor plans!  Wahoo!

What color is your bedroom/kitchen/living room?
You guessed it, a full listing of each room's color can also be found beneath the room photos on the Home Tour Page.

Where do you find all of your cute fonts?
All over the www.  A few of my favorite sites to browse are: Font Squirrel, Dafont, 1001FreeFonts, Urban Fonts and Lost Type.

Can you move to Texas/California/Florida and be my best friend?
As long as the climate is a warm one, I am dreaming of moving there.  You fine friends in Antarctica, my apologies but you won't be seeing this gal in the flesh.  And I would be honored to be your best friend, that question makes me smile every time!  In fact, although we haven't met personally, I consider you all very dear friends, never forget that!

What kind of printer do you use?
I print a lot of documents and labels, so I invested in a laser printer.  I was lucky enough to find my current printer on black Friday so I got a great deal! It’s the HP LaserJet CP1525nw color and so far I love it!  Prior to having a laserjet printer, I had a HP Photosmart printer which was great for projects around the house. Depending on your price point, I’ve found that most HP photosmart printers are excellent for high quality printing.

What kind of label maker do you use?
I use this label maker. the Epson LabelWorks LW-400.  I combine it with the clear tape {since I like the streamlined look it offers}. The label maker offers many font sizes and types and I also find that it is very user friendly.  You can find more details here.

  4. Just wanted to let you know, I never have a problem loading your blog in Chrome. I don't have a ton of technical knowledge but I believe slow load time usually is caused by too many plugins (if you use them) or the amount of images on a blog. But then it could also just be that IE is a horrible browser :) I am a huge Chrome fan.

  5. Great FAQs! Yes, I think IE is the culprit. Chrome works wonderfully! Keep up the great work!

  6. I have had the same issues with Internet Explorer. I can't even get my personal hotmail account to load half of the time. I finally got so frustrated that I downloaded Google Chrome and I love it. I haven't had any issues with pages not loading or anything. And, yours especially loads wonderfully for me.

    Love the new FAQ tab!!!

  8. Jen,

Speaking of free printables, I just wanted to say thanks for "A Peek at the Week." I started using these in April and they make me so happy. My husband teased me at first (I'm a crazy list-maker to begin with) but now after we do our groceries we talk together about what to freeze and what to keep out as I write the menu for the week. It's just brilliant to have one place to keep to-do's, to-buy's, to-eats, etc... instead of in little random notebooks that all live in different places.

I just used the Project printable to outline our summer projects too. Thanks again for sharing!

    1. Hi Katie!

Great question! I find an image or graphic that I like that has a great color scheme and open it in Photoshop. Then, I use the eyedropper tool to grab colors from the image. I just select things that seem to work well together. I have only done this a few times, I tend to stick with the same scheme once I find one.

    2. Thanks Jen I finally found "my" colours but LOVE to steal your dots to go under the titles on my cleaning chart (its in Excel) I thought I could do it with dotted lines and overlay one at a time and got to the end and it looks funny at 100% but good at 400% mag'n. How did you make yours?

It's a bit of a challenge to try and explain, but I basically made myself a super small cell in Excel, used the circle shape and then copied and pasted that cell.

  19. Hi Jen,
I was wondering what kind of printer you use?
I made my daughter's birthday invitation (.png) in Photoshop and went to the local print shop with the file on a usb stick to have them printed off because I don't own a printer. When I collected them, I was horrified. The quality of them was so bad!! I felt like I had flushed my money for them down the toilet. I am ashamed to hand them out!! The manager insisted it was my file that was the cause of the bad quality. That's funny cos it looked perfectly fine to me when I made it!! Should I have put the image in Word instead? It's too late to do anything else so I am forced to hand out these horrible invites... But I am hoping to invest in a great printer so that this doesn't have to happen to me again. Love your site by the way!

I believe you are thinking of the Wisdom Script Font: http://www.losttype.com/font/?name=wisdom%20script

  48. Hi Jen,
I'm a fairly new blogger....took a break but looking to get back into it. I'm trying to clean up my blog design and better use (simplythesims-blog.blogspot.com). I love your side bar and the colors, dots below the headers and I like your 'follow me' portion, especially the pinterest, facebook, etc...labels. Did you use a widget for this? I have no idea how to get my sidebar to look as nice as yours. Any help would be great!!

    1. Hi Lauren!

That is correct. I just whipped them up in Photoshop and inserted them as a Photo Widget on the sidebar. I believe you could also insert them using HTML code, in the form of a table. I did that for my sponsors and it has been working really well. Just some simple googling around will help with that.

Best wishes to you as you hop back into blogging!! <3

  49. Hey Jen!

I was looking through your blog about your new 2014 Planner {which I am SO excited to purchase!!} and noticed that you had 15 different cover sheets! On that note, I went to your Etsy shop to purchase one and noticed there were only 3 choices to pick from. I'm not sure if I am looking in the wrong spot or if you no longer offer the other 12 cover sheets, so I wanted to double check!

      Thanks for mentioning that! xoxo!

  50. Hi Jen,
I just found your blog and love your organising tips. However (uh oh, what now?), I live in Britain where, unless you're a millionaire, the houses are TINY! I'd love to be able to have a separate playroom for my children but that's not possible. Do you have any tips or know of any blogs with tip on compact living and how to maximise on storage space whilst living in what is basically a large tree house on the ground?

    1. Hi Pippa, while I'm not Jen, I live in a small apartment here in the US. One of the best ways I have found to organize is to go vertical anyway you can. Anything that can stack or hang really helps a small space feel more organized and less cluttered. :)

  51. YOUR SITE IS ***SO*** ADDICTIVE! Unfortunately I have like 5 projects going at the same time that I started from browsing your blog, on top of all the things I ***need/want*** to do in the house.... But at least I have a foolproof guide of what I want to accomplish... Like so many others, I can't thank you enough. The planner is so helpful, the printables are amazing, and the posts are so inspiring. Keep it up!

  52. Jen,

I purchased a bunch of the printables you offer in your Etsy shop & I loved them {this past year}! However, I have had to move to a smaller size planner now so I can carry it with me at all times :( have you given any thought to making printable planner pages in a smaller format in your Etsy shop?

    1. It's on my wishlist for sure! However, unfortunately, I can't just shrink down the pages I have already spent time designing, I have to design them for the specific smaller page size and start from scratch. I wish it was quicker and easier, but I haven't quite nailed that down yet, so I am not sure how quickly I can get new pages released in my shop.

      Sorry! xo!

    2. Oh I completely understand that it must be quite the time consuming process. Just wanted to get your thoughts on it as you continue to expand your Etsy shop. I am still using all of your pretty printables to manage my home binder :)

  53. Hi Jen,
How do you create your link to download your PDF files?

    1. Hi Lauren!

I use box.com to host my PDF files {I pay a monthly fee}, and they provide me with a link to share with my readers.

  54. Hi, Jen!

Thanks so much for all the time and hard work you put into your blog. I absolutely love the ideas & inspiration you share! I've put your 2014 planner on my Christmas wish list & am looking forward to being able to print it out & actually put it together! I have a quick question about all of the beautiful backgrounds you use in your printables. Do you create them yourself & if so, with what program? Looking forward to Monday's post!

    Sincerely,
    Christie B.

  55. Hey Jen,
If I want to use an image from pinterest on my blog, can I just copy and paste it or do I have to add the url and link it back to that page? If so how would I do that? hope you can help me Jen

  57. Ok..I am coming into "Jen's world" late, but I guess it's better late than never! First, you have the best organizing instructions/tips I've seen. I LOVE this blog, and will be going through old posts. I would really like to know how you make the labels with individual letters? Right now, everything in my kitchen is out of cabinets, and I am starting the long process...I am almost ready go shove it all back in, as it's been two days already and I feel like it's taking way too long.....ahhhg. Wanna come do my kitchen Jen? Lol

    1. Hi Whitney! Thank you for stopping by with your sweetness!

Hang in there! We had our kitchen pantry emptied onto our dining table for a few days until the entire process was done. It will be worth it, I promise! :) It always gets worse before it gets better.

You can find a lot of my labeling tutorials here: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/search/label/Labeling%20101

If that doesn't help, be sure to let me know. Thanks so much!!

  58. Do you have a post going into detail about how and where you use your Silhouette creations? I tried searching your blog with "silhouette" and nearly all the results are give-aways. You often briefly mention "I made this with my Silhouette" throughout your various posts. That's fine and all, but I was hoping for a comprehensive blog post of how you use your machine, like you did with labels and such.

I'm tempted to get a machine myself, but with how expensive it is, I want to be sure I'd use it. So I was wondering if you use it for things I hadn't thought of using it for.

(I never win the give-aways on any blog, so I gave up applying.)

    1. Hi April!

You can find all of my previous Silhouette posts here: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/search/label/Silhouette

Some have more detail than others. To be honest, I find tutorials on the Silhouette Blog and on You Tube, when I am attempting to work with a new material. I find their videos to be the most helpful, as I am a really visual person.

I use the machine for many things! It is really versatile, which I adore. Above and beyond endless varieties of labels, I can cut fabric, iron-on transfers for pillows and bins, cut stamps, cards, banners, projects for the kids, sketch art, etc...

  60. ok question? I found a couple weeks ago a post you did and you used Zippered mesh vinyl pouches from the container store. Well I ordered them cause I obviously loved the idea and now I can't remember what they are for? lol If you could let me know that would be awesome! :) Melanie
