How did you get started blogging?
I have always loved journaling and being an over sharer, and when I started staying home full time with the kiddos, it was a creative outlet for me to provide some home and organizing tips. I just decided one day, "I love reading blogs, I should write one too!". It was basically for friends and family {and an enjoyable outlet for me to focus on in my few spare mommy seconds} and it began to grow through word of mouth and some sweet features. When I started blogging back in the fall of 2009, I never would have imagined I would be doing it full time someday. It's been a pretty surreal experience and I have to pinch myself daily to see if I am dreaming. You can find more details and some additional thoughts on the subject in an oldie post here.
Who designed your blog?
That would be yours truly. The header and sidebar are basic fonts and graphics that I created using my minimal Photoshop knowledge. I used a simple Blogger template which I modified with my own images and by using the customization tool within the blogger program. Everything on the sidebar is added through a "widget" that is offered by blogger {for example; pictures, html, followers, etc...}. The good news is that Blogger is pretty simple to update and modify without knowing much {or any} coding. The bad news is that my site has been very "laggy" and I have zero clue as to why. So, while I look at my hosting and design options for the future of IHeart Organizing, I have heard that many of the browsing issues happen within Internet Explorer and that the blog is much more pleasurable when being viewed with Firefox or Chrome browsers.
What kind of camera do you use?
What kind of software do you use to make your printables?
I use Microsoft Office 2010 to create all of my labels and printables. Majority of the items are created using Microsoft Excel, however, I just recently began dabbling in Publisher and I am really enjoying the ease of that program as well.
I can't download your free binder kit, what's the deal?
I am sorry sweet friends. The binder downloads were free for one month only, as a special promo while I was working on the project with my readers. They are now available in my shop and are one of the primary ways I am able contribute to supporting my family, so I appreciate your understanding in regards to the expired free trial. I do offer a variety of free printables, which you can find here, and hope to continue to expand that feature in the future!
How do you make the letters in your graphics alternate in color?
It's a manual and tedious thing. One letter at a time people, one letter at a time....
What do you do now that you're not a daycare provider?
It is absolutely crazy to believe that I retired from being a daycare provider to become a full time blogger, however, that is the sweet fact. My youngest son is in half day 4K this year, so I still have a lot of time devoted to being "mom" by day and blogging at night or during the few hours that all of the kidlets are in school during the afternoon. Along with being an at home mom, I now make a living by running the blog, answering questions and emails, projecting, working with friends and family on their spaces, contributing to BHG.com, designing organizing printables and labeling anything I come in contact with.
When are you going to start accepting Style Tiles again?
At this time I don't have the capacity to manage Style Tiles along with my other life and work obligations. However, once all of my boys are in school full time, I would love to begin partnering up with folks to help style and organize spaces locally, and have plans to offer the Style Tiles as a service when that happens. Fingers are crossed! Ditto to custom printable work.
The source for the infamous laundry room rug is Urban Outfitters. You can find all of our home product sources by allowing our Home Tour Page to load completely, and then hovering on each photo over the object you are interested in tracking down.
The Home Tour Page now includes the upper and lower level floor plans! Wahoo!
You guessed it, a full listing of each room's color can also be found beneath the room photos on the Home Tour Page.
All over the www. A few of my favorite sites to browse are: Font Squirrel, Dafont, 1001FreeFonts, Urban Fonts and Lost Type.
As long as the climate is a warm one, I am dreaming of moving there. You fine friends in Antarctica, my apologies but you won't be seeing this gal in the flesh. And I would be honored to be your best friend, that question makes me smile every time! In fact, although we haven't met personally, I consider you all very dear friends, never forget that!
I do share little tidbits of our family life over on our personal blog. It's basically how I scrapbook now that I don't have time to really scrapbook. I would love for you to stop by and visit from time to time to keep up with the Joneses.
What kind of printer do you use?
I print a lot of documents and labels, so I invested in a laser printer. I was lucky enough to find my current printer on black Friday so I got a great deal! It’s the HP LaserJet CP1525nw color and so far I love it! Prior to having a laserjet printer, I had a HP Photosmart printer which was great for projects around the house. Depending on your price point, I’ve found that most HP photosmart printers are excellent for high quality printing.
What kind of label maker do you use?
I use this label maker. the Epson Labelworks LW-400. I combine it with the clear tape {since I like the streamlined look it offers}. The label maker offers many font sizes and types and I also find that it is very user friendly.
Thanks so much and feel free to check back frequently to find more answers to those burning IHeart Organizing questions.

You are an ídol to me...
ReplyDeletehttp://qcomeshoy.blogspot.com.es/
I enjoyed reading these FAQs! You always have such great blogs, especially the ones where you show how you organize! I love "borrowing" your ideas. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou sure have a come a long way since 2009! I myself feel very fortunate to have found your blog and thank you for being so generous with your time and talent.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to let you know, I never have a problem loading your blog in Chrome. I don't have a ton of technical knowledge but I believe slow load time usually is caused by too many plugins (if you use them) or the amount of images on a blog. But then it could also just be that IE is a horrible browser :) I am a huge Chrome fan.
ReplyDeleteGreat FAQs! Yes, I think IE is the culprit. Chrome works wonderfully! Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteI have had the same issues with Internet Explorer. I can't even get my personal hotmail account to load half of the time. I finally got so frustrated that I downloaded Google Chrome and I love it. I haven't had any issues with pages not loading or anything. And, yours especially loads wonderfully for me.
ReplyDeleteLove the new FAQ tab!!!
xoxo,
Kristin
Well done, friend. Smart to put it all in one place. Thank you for all of the time and effort you pour into this sweet blog.
ReplyDeleteJen,
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of free printables, I just wanted to say thanks for "A Peek at the Week." I started using these in April and they make me so happy. My husband teased me at first (I'm a crazy list-maker to begin with) but now after we do our groceries we talk together about what to freeze and what to keep out as I write the menu for the week. It's just brilliant to have one place to keep to-do's, to-buy's, to-eats, etc... instead of in little random notebooks that all live in different places.
I just used the Project printable to outline our summer projects too. Thanks again for sharing!
As always, LOVE your blog! You are just so dang talented at it...I'm really glad you gave it a shot. Its inspiring to me. Thanks!

I had to laugh as I must not be the only Californian that wishes you would live here so I could hire you to come over (and be my friend of course!!!). Your ideas are fantastic and I have been little by little able to get a few organizing projects done with your blog as my inspiration! Jana H
ReplyDeleteJen,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for taking the time to tell us all your behind the scenes info. You have been incredibly helpful and inspirational. I personally look up to you, love your ideas and motivation. Thanks for being so open!
Thank you,
Sandra from www.simpleispretty.com
Hahaha, I laughed out loud at the "Can you move to....and be my best friend?" I've often wished you lived closer so I could at least meet you, so I'm not surprised that people have asked that.
ReplyDeleteLove that question! :) Wish I could travel the country and do meet and greets and house crashes! Maybe when the kids grow up and move out, lol.
Deletexoxo,
Jen
Jen, thanks so much for all of your dedication to your blog! Your blog is inspiring and has really helped me to transform my life and focus on areas that are in need of attention! I am so much more on top of my life now that I'm becoming more organized. PS- Virginia is where it's at! ;]
ReplyDeleteThanks Jen. I have been wondering how you add your "handwritten" notes to a page (as you've done above). Do you do it in Photoshop then upload the whole picture including the label?
ReplyDeleteHi Nikki!
DeleteThat is correct, I create them in photo shop and upload them to blogger as a photo.
xoxo,
Jen
I have managed to get the fonts and make some labels.... but you know what I really like? The colour rainbow.... how on earth do you find nice colours that go without them all being super bright or all pastel or not going at all! Theres so many choices too! Any chance you want to share?
ReplyDeleteHi Katie!
DeleteGreat question! I find an image or graphic that I like that has a great color scheme and open it in Photoshop. Then, I use the eyedropper tool to grab colors from the image. I just select things that seem to work well together. I have only done this a few times, I tend to stick with the same scheme once I find one.
xoxo!
Jen
Thanks Jen I finally found "my" colours but LOVE to steal your dots to go under the titles on my cleaning chart (its in Excel) I thought I could do it with dotted lines and overlay one at a time and got to the end and it looks funny at 100% but good at 400% mag'n. How did you make yours?
DeleteHi Katie!
DeleteIt's a bit of a challenge to try and explain, but I basically made myself a super small cell in Excel, used the circle shape and then copied and pasted that cell.
xoxo!
Jen
Thanks for sharing more of your life and blogging experiences. It's always a pleasure to tune into your site.
ReplyDeleteKeep writing...
Thanks for your awesome blog. I am a faithful follower. You have inpired me so much. Have a great weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteYou should have a youtube channel!!! You also have a beautiful home and lovely family.
ReplyDeleteHi Jen,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what kind of printer you use?
I made my daughter's birthday invitation (.png) in Photoshop and went to the local print shop with the file on a usb stick to have them printed off because I don't own a printer. When I collected them, I was horrified. The quality of them was so bad!! I felt like I had flushed my money for them down the toilet. I am ashamed to hand them out!! The manager insisted it was my file that was the cause of the bad quality. That's funny cos it looked perfectly fine to me when I made it!! Should I have put the image in Word instead? It's too late to do anything else so I am forced to hand out these horrible invites... But I am hoping to invest in a great printer so that this doesn't have to happen to me again. Love your site by the way!

Thanks for the recommendation Jen! That is great that you got a great deal on your printer! I love that you make your own printables. :)
DeleteHope you and your family are enjoying summer! I live in England (Though I am American - I married a Brit) and the weather here is not always as great as it is in the States... but when it's nice and sunny out, we make the most of it!
OMG IHeart your blog!! I recently found it while browsing pinterest and you are my hero! In the middle of moving house with a 1 year old boy while 6 months pregnant of our second you would think id be stressing over packing boxes instead of browsing your blog ;) yet your blog is so inspiring I wish there where more hours in the day to take on some projects myself! soon Ill have time again! Already claimed a few spots in the house for "myself" Thanks for sharing all the wonderfull ideas Jen!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of your tutorials & fantastic ideas!! I love your checklists, etc. Could you do a tutorial on how you make some of them? For example, I love your idea of cleaning checklist...however, I want mine laid out completely different. OR do you change layouts of we buy them in your store??? Thank you for any help!!!
ReplyDelete*if
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
DeleteAll of the checklists are made using Microsoft Excel using fun fonts and colors. At this time, we only offer the layouts featured in the store but we're hoping to be able to offer customized items in the future! Stay tuned!

Hi Jen,
ReplyDeleteI am a 22 year old who lives in Nova Scotia, Canada. I love your blog! I have been gaining SO much information and ideas from it. You're AWESOME, and I'm so glad that I stumbled upon your blog. I have been sending the link to friends for a while now, simply telling them that they can get an idea for what they want to do from past projects you've done. I wish all the very best to your future in blogging, as it's simply great.
Kaila :)
Thank you for the kind comment and for sharing the blog! You have plastered a smile on my face!

Can you please tell me how you labeled the laundry sorting baskets from Crate and Barrel? The ones that say whites and linens? (Folding Hampers with Grommets)
ReplyDeleteI love that idea!! Thanks for sharing all your ideas! You amaze me!!
Hi Sharon!

Jen,
DeleteI read the blog using the Silhouette, what an amazing machine. I may have to look into purchasing that in the future. However in the meantime I looked on Etsy for someone who I could pay to make me some words using the Silhouette but had a hard time. I wondered if you have bought or can recommend someone on Etsy that I could pay to make the words? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!!!
Hi Sharon!
DeleteI haven't seen many on Etsy, although, I also haven't looked much. I do know that Shelley from The House of Smiths sells great vinyl labels, you could check her shop here: http://www.thehouseofsmithsdesigns.com/

Love your site! Have watched you grow over the past few years. Glad you can call yourself a full time blogger now! You deserve it.
ReplyDeleteHi, I was wondering how you got all those sponsors and how you were featured? I am trying to build my blog and I want to get the word out. Thanks so much and I love your blog!
ReplyDeleteHi Dana!
DeleteI was featured by submitting my work to some of my favorite blogs, and sponsors sort of started coming after I was featured. :) Here are the details: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2011/10/you-asked-thoughts-and-tips-on-blogging.html

Hi Jen, You are an inspiration! We're thinking of downsizing in order to rid our lives of all the extra clutter. Would you mind sharing the square footage of your home upstairs and downstairs to give us an idea of what we need to live a comfortable, organized life with 3 kiddos? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi there!
DeleteOur home is approximately 2200 square feet. We have about 1200 on our main level and added an additional 1000 finished sq ft in the lower level.
I find we have plenty of living space for our family, we are very fortunate. :)
xo,
Jen
Thank you for your quick response! We are looking at moving to 1700 sq ft. I know with all your wonderful ideas that we can do it! Thanks again!
DeleteI was wondering if you are going to have another give away of a silhouette cameo for the holidays? Or at least have them marked down in price for the holidays?!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Love your blog
Leita
Hi Leita!
DeleteI have gotten word that there will be some great Black Friday sales! Stay tuned! :)

ps oops just found the fb and pinterest area(and twitter) may I suggest they be moved to the top of the page?
Great suggestion! I will be sure to update that in the future when I make website enhancements.
DeleteThanks so much for stopping by! :)

Jen
Hi Jen! I love your blog and I think you have done an absolutely beautiful job designing it all on your own! I am trying to redesign/update my blogger blog and am having problems getting my customized background to work. Can you tell me what blogger template you use? Also, could you point me toward a good tutorial to get my background to upload correctly? If you can't get to that, that's fine, but I'd REALLY love to know which template you use! Thanks so much in advance!
ReplyDeleteAllison
Hi Allison!
DeleteThanks so much! I use the Dynamic Views template. The background needs to be a tiled image and I like to have it remain stationary while scrolling {it's a simple checkbox}.
Hope that helps!
xo,
Jen
Just wondering what kind of printer you use to print all of these colorful goodies from!?!?! Thanks, Miranda
ReplyDeleteI love your calendar for 2013 I am just curious about the Discbound product. I saw it on the Staples web site but I am wondering how you get your printables punched to fit? Thanks Jen
ReplyDeleteHi Jen!
DeleteI used a "discbound" punch which I purchased at Staples. It can punch papers and page dividers to be used with the discbound system.

Hi Jen! I would love to invest in a laminator and was wondering what you use at your house?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Heather
Hi Heather!
DeleteI found mine a few years ago at Target or Walmart, it is a GBC. I don't see the same one there any longer, but it was only around $30 so I am guessing that any around that price point would be about as good.

Jen
Hi Jenn,
ReplyDeleteI adore you items and have even bought a few off Etsy - I am trying to go more and more paper free this year ( it's been so hard after seeing your 2013 family planner) but I was wondering if you have considered doing an APP version of your family planning and or other printables. I would love to be able to use them on my iPad.
I love all the pretty things you make - I've read you do a lot of it in excel, but how do you get the pretty borders on them? Especially double and triple borders? I tried in Word by layering three borders in side each other but I can't get them precise - parts of one end up covering another. Thanks for your stuff and help!
ReplyDeleteHi Crystal!
DeleteIt really depends on what I am bordering. There are times I use the cells to create borders and other times that I right click a shape and edit the borders there. You can see an oldie Excel label tutorial I did here which might help: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2010/08/you-asked-label-me.html

WRAPPING PAPER ORGANIZER
ReplyDeleteWondering where to buy the 'Over the Door-Wrapping paper Orgainizer'??????
Looked for along time on your site and Home Tour, but cannot find info on that.
Love your site and thank you for your help.
Hi Lonnie!
DeleteI had a reader do the project here: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2012/02/reader-space-great-gift-wrap.html
And a contributor here: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2012/09/uheart-organizing-wrap-it-up.html
Hope that helps!

I wish you had a domain name! Some are quite cheap!
ReplyDeleteI would love to get a label maker. I like the fact that yours is clear and you can put the label on anything. Could you tell me which one you have?
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy!
DeleteI use this label maker: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J7Y6GS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005J7Y6GS&linkCode=as2&tag=iheaorga-20

Hi jen I am your biggest fan from Mexico you've inspired me to start a home improvement re-Organizing everything and I have an endless project to do list, I want to be just like you mexican version lol.. My question is about your door wreath how did you do it is it natural how often do you change it, do you water it? I hope you reply :D ps. I don't know how you find the time I have 2 baby girls (1 and 2 years old) and I have to wait until they're fast asleep to do some I heart organizing at home ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Priscilla!
DeleteThe door wreath is actually an artificial boxwood that I found at Target a few years back. It has held up to our harsh summer and winter climates quite well over the years. :)

Hi Jen! Where do you buy your wet erase chalk markers? The only places I've found online with fine tip white ones are websites I've never heard of.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hello!
DeleteI found mine at Michaels, but I have heard most craft stores carry them. They are a bit tricky to find but if I recall, they are located with paint pens.
You can also find a variety of options right on Amazon.

Jen
Big Fan Jen!!!
ReplyDeleteQuick question - do you use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements? What version? I need it to make my own kiddos invitations and other projects. I know you use it minimally and your site is super cute while still looking clean and professional.
Thanks in advance!!!
Hello!
DeleteI use Photoshop CS3. :)

Jen
Hi, Love your DIY cleaner labels, unfounately I cannot print them. I saved them to my computer aand there is nothing there.
ReplyDeleteThe recipe list printed but no labels..Bummer...
Hello!
DeleteThe label file is for Microsoft Word so I believe it will need to be opened and printed with a Windows PC. Converting the file to a PDF always seems to change the margins and the labels no longer align. Unfortunately, I am unsure how to convert them to be compatible with Macs.

Jen
Hi Jen!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you get the "Pin Me" button on each of your photos. I'm interested in adding that feature to my own blog. Thanks so much!
Holly
Hi Holly!
DeleteI created the image and then added it with HTML code. I believe I used this tutorial: http://www.bloggersentral.com/2012/11/pinterest-pin-it-button-on-image-hover.html
