64 IHeart Silhouette: Some Projects and a Promo!

Happy day and surprise weekend post!

I am popping in to share a couple of super quick, easy peasy fun projects I was able to do, with a special thanks to Silhouette.

Earlier this week, I received some chalkboard vinyl and frosted vinyl to play with and it made me fall in love with my Silhouette CAMEO™ even more {and I totally didn't know that was possible}.  I started small, but now that I know how easy it all is to work with and the potential, I can't wait to put the cutting machine back to work.

I started out with the frosted vinyl, which looks just like silver vinyl at first glance.  But don't be fooled...

I wanted to do something for the laundry room, I already had a glass jar, it was just a little plain for my liking.  You treat it just as you would any type of vinyl:

Here it is in front of the lights so you can see how the frosted effect works:

Super sweet.  That was attempt numero uno.  I didn't get the frosted letters centered where I wanted.  I wasn't loving my design.  That is the beauty of this stuff.  It's always removable and not permanent so I could try again!

As I mentioned, I also got to play with the chalkboard vinyl!

The kitchen got a couple of cute upgrades:

Starting with my herb planters:

Now, we know which herbs are which.  Not that we didn't know before, but in case we ever swap things out {which we do occasionally}, we now have labeling flexibility!

Plus, it's adorable!

I added a label to the doggie treats also.  I decided for this one that it was a little more charming without my scribbles stating the obvious:

If you haven't had the pleasure of trying the Silhouette chalkboard vinyl or frosted vinyl, now is the time. These are the two most popular vinyl products from Silhouette and can now be had in a special bundle with or without the Silhouette CAMEO™. Use the included transfer paper to transfer your cutout designs to your project surface!

  3. Hi Jen, silly questions - does the Silhouette Cameo come with special software that you use to design your labels or do you use it just like a printer (ie. you design your labels in Word and then print them out on the Silhouette).

    Thanks...........Bridget

    1. Hi Bridget!

The Silhouette does come with software where you can design your cuts before sending them to the machine. They have an online store built in where you can purchase just about any design or graphic you could ever want {for about $1 each}, or you can use any fonts already installed on your computer.

    2. Hi Bridget - (And Jen, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog!) Anyway, I am replying too because I JUST got a Silhouette and am totally new to cutting and I kind of was confused on this one. I had the impression that I could print AND cut on my silhouette. And you can... kind of. You can design with the software that they give you and use all the fonts installed on your computer. But the part I sort of didn't get is that it is a 2 step process - first, you print it out on YOUR PRINTER, and then you feed it into the silhouette which can detect the cuts as you had designed it. I just wanted to make that clear because you wrote "print them out on your Silhouette" and that isn't how it works exactly. Good luck!

  5. I really like the chalkboard labels! I don't have a Silhouette though. ;( I'll read more about it and consider it!
I just started a new organizing blog myself so I'm checking out other blogs right now. I'm following you also! You can find my blog at awellorderedlife.blogspot.com. This link will probably take you to my other blog, Hob Nobbers, a vintage blog.

    1. Hi Cindy, I'm in Australia too. Silhouette America don't ship to Australia but Cut At Home sell them too and they do. I figure with shipping and a power adapter it will still work out cheaper than what they will sell them for here....Bridget

    2. There are several stockists in Australia too. There is a list on the Silhouette website. :)

  7. Do you use your silhouette for all the labels you make (like your bins and things around your home) or do you usually just print those out?

    1. I never limit myself to one label outlet, but I do use my Silhouette frequently to create decorative labels and designs. I also design many through Microsoft Excel and Publisher and print on cardstock.

  9. Jen,

I have considered buying a Cricut but am now curious about the Silhouette since you've mentioned it several times. Where do I go to get the special offer you've included? I can't find any live links to use. Also, do you have to use the vinyl adhesive specifically made for it, or can you buy from other sources?

    Thanks!

Here is the link for you: http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/blog-312.aspx

You can always use other items with your Silhouette, such as vinyl, cardstock, etc... it doesn't have to come directly from the Silhouette website.

      Thanks so much!

    3. Beth-
I have the cricut expression and have had for a few years! Just like anything electronic, there are little things that are better on one rather than the other. My "crafting" group of friends are a mix of both the Silhouette and the Cricut (makes for great discussion :) ) The biggest difference is that the Cricut uses cartridges that you buy versus the Silhouette which has you download images/designs. You can't go wrong with either. They are both great!

  10. so, so cute!! I love the soap container that you are using and need one like that - looks great. I have the cricut but love the chalkboard background you have here.

  11. It looks like we have the exact same small kitchen layout, so I am wondering how you find the space for everything? Are there photos of your kitchen (insides of cabinets, how you utilize the space, etc?) somewhere? I am really pulling my hair out lately.

  17. Oh Jen!! I love what you did. I have been wanting to add something to my big glass container holding my Oxyclean in my laundry room. I love the chalkboard labels added to your IKEA planters. :) I have been secretly eying a Silhouette for some time now. I love all the designs and things it does. (and I am tired of fighting with my Slice machine).

  18. Jen,

Okay, the post today finally made me decide to purchase the Silhouette. I am so excited that I am doing my little happy dance and am completely pumped to receive it. I am pretty sure I have no less that 30 different projects that I can immediately kick off with. Question for you, what do you feel are the absolute essential Silhouette items (outside the bundle) that a person should have?

    Kind regards,
    Michelle

    1. Congrats Michelle, I am happy dancing with you. The ways to use it are endless so I am positive it will be worth your investment! Enjoy!

I purchased a hook and spatula: http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/tools.aspx These are great when trying to pick out little cut out pieces.
And an extra blade and mat, that I still haven't had to replace: http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/replacement.aspx

Otherwise, it comes with everything you need to get started! From there, you will really just need to find cardstock and vinyl for most projects. :)

      xoxo,
      Jen

  20. I feel so dumb...I've been trying to figure out how everyone makes the vinyl thing look so easy because it was taking me forever to do it. Thanks to your pics, I've figured out my problem. I was taking the letters off the backing first then sticking them to stuff. I should've been leaving the backing on. DOH! Try lining up individual letters in a straight line and you'll understand why I was so confused.

  21. I love my silhouette only I wish I had the cameo now...ugh!! Wish I would have waited before purchasing the first model last year. Love the chalkboard labels going to order some!!

  22. Just bought one! Was going to get a circut, but after seeing this deal and doing some research, I bought it! So excited!!

  23. Eeee!!! Frosted vinyl!!! A silhouette has been on my wishlist for a while now, I'm tempted to send this post to hubby as a giant hint for my brithday!

  24. I knew I should have waited another week to buy my CAMEO! I'll definitely be buying that vinyl pack though!

  25. I LOVE the look of that frosted vinyl. I spent the weekend making a bunch of projects with my cameo, including attempting to put words on my mixer. Thinking I need to get some of the frosted vinyl to put on some Ikea shelves I'm turning into wall hangings.

  26. This is random and not about the Cameo (which I would really LOVE to own someday...hopefully soon), but I just wanted to say that I noticed you painted your Willow House basket in the laundry room and I LOVE IT! I have a few different Willow house wire baskets and I would not have thought of that. Very cute!

  27. Hi Jen,

The Cameo has been on my 'wish list' for a while now and this special looks too good to pass up. Just a few questions for you: 1. Did you have to print on your printer first then use the Cameo to cut? Or does the Cameo print also?
    2. Is the vinyl available in stores or just online?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Hayden!

Everything you have seen me do on my blog so far has always been done just by using the cutting feature on the Silhouette {design on my computer and send to the Silhouette to cut}. However, it is my understanding that you can print projects on your printer and insert them to be cut on the Silhouette as well.

The vinyl is available in craft stores {it doesn't have to be Silhouette specific} or online.

      xoxo!

At first I thought I was looking at mine.. until I saw the herb names:P I had done the same exact thing back in April with mine except for plants! Purely coincidence!! I guess great minds think alike;) I had purchased mine back in January to use as serving vessels for a party... then later on decided to actually use them as planters. Pretty neat!

  36. Hello from cold and snowy Michigan-

The picture with the soap- Do you make your own detergent?

If you do- could you please share the recipe. I want to start making it so there are less chemicals and hopefully cheaper- BUT I don't know where to start. I want to make sure it works well.

    Thanks in advance!
