50 April Challenge: Project "Purge" {Intro}

Hi Friends!

April is all about Spring.  Spring cleaning and spring purging!  I love to purge down in the spring, it always seems to bring a fresh and simple feeling to the home.

Organizing is much more than containerizing and creating a home for everything.  In fact, getting back to organizing basics is all about living more simplified.  And you can't do that, unless your purge!

This is where things get dicey and challenging for most.  We all want to "organize", but we also have a hard time letting go.  If we don't let go, things build up, piles are formed, drawers are bursting at the seems, and then suddenly, we are spending minutes of our precious time rummaging to find things.  I don't know about you, but I really get hot and flustered and start to panic the minute I can't find something.  And the longer I look, the worse I get.  That feeling is my worst enemy, and that's why I am always quick to say goodbye to the unnecessary clutter and build up in my life.  Although it's easy for me to see the long term benefits of removing a road block, I have worked and spoken with and lived with those that have a harder time saying goodbye.  Whether it was a gift received that they are holding on to for sentimental purposes or something they may have invested in and it's too painful to part with, even though they haven't touched it in years {hubby, that's you and that 200 disc changer and original Atari sitting in our storage room}.

So this month, I am posing a challenge.  Say farewell to 30 things in 30 days.  That's just one thing per day.  And if you find a couple of things in one day, then you are caught up, or, you can get extra purging credit for going above and beyond the 30 mark.

Each week I would like to focus on a space of the home and chat about how to decide what stays and what goes.  I will be doing this with you, so I will also share the items I choose to say goodbye to, and the whys.  I will also share "how" I shed myself of that item, by choosing to donate, toss or sell it.

I am hoping to go through some of the selling process with you all as well, as I already have items picked in my brain that I am hoping to make some cash off of.  In fact, I am going to pick from the one space throughout the week, and then list the items on Thursday evening so they run through the weekend.

Here's the plan:

I hope everyone is excited and motivated to purge, simplify and maybe even make a buck or two!  Just grab three large baskets or boxes or even garbage sacks and label them {Sell, Donate, Toss} and get ready to purge purge purge!

Who's in!?  Who can testify that living simply and letting go is the way to go?  Who has a hard time saying goodbye and why?  What clutter busting tips and tricks do you have for those learning to let go?

I decided a little challenge would be fun! This month we are spending the next thirty days saying goodbye to thirty things!  Wanna Join in?  Take photos and blog about your awesomeness as you go!  I am hoping to do a giant, "We did it!" celebratory post where we can all link up our purging success stories at the end of the month!

  1. i love tossing things. but we can't talk too loudly about it, because i live with two pack rats that sometimes dig through the trash to make sure i didn't throw away a precious VHS or 3.5 floppy disc.

i did get rid of 7 out of 29 of John's tshirts last week. shhhhhhhh........

  3. We are moving in two weeks from a one-bedroom apartment to a 3-bedroom townhouse so I cannot WAIT for all the purging/donating/spring cleaning that is about to occur!

  4. Sounds great! I'm in! I can already think of some hand-me-down mismatched furniture to take to the consignment store and some clothing to take to Goodwill.

  5. I need to get rid of at least a third of my house. It gets totally overwhelming, but I know I can get rid of 30 things. That is doable. Thanks!

  10. I'm tempted to get rid of 30 things A DAY for the next 30 days. I'm pretty sure that we could stand to lose 300 items of our house. That may be a bit ambitious, but I think I'm going to go for it! Thanks for the challenge!

  12. I am in!!!I did your challenge for last month but due to major surgery on Feb 28th I am still pulling it all together. I will post on my blog and link over to you when I get it finished.
I can't wait for this month's challenge! I heart your blog and it gave me lots of great reading during my hard recovery. I am an organizing junkie to say the least. I have a head start as before I read your post today I had purged my bathroom cabinets and my closet shelves! Two large bags for yard sale and one large trash bag! Whoo-hoo! I love purging and creating free space. April's challenge should be fun! Thanks for inspiring us and keeping us organized.

  13. Great project. I'm working on Simplifying our lives this year and just today I was thinking that one of my projects needs to be something like this. I had planned to do this later this summer but I think I'll try plugging it in now so I can "play" along!

  14. I'm so in! I have piles of stuff I want gone. 30 things in 30 days is very doable.

  15. This is a great idea! Perfect timing for me, too-in time for our May garage sale. I think I'll get the whole family involved, so 150 items in 30 days. WHOO HOO!!!!

  16. I'm gonna go with Ashley and go for 30 things a day and combine it with monkey sews' idea, too. We have 7, too. For me, it's not about letting go, it's about finding the time to go through things! Maybe I should be going through my bathroom while I'm waiting for my little one to get out of the tub instead of posting! Great challenge :-)

  17. Sweet mercy! I could do 30 every day for a month! I'm doing spring cleaning week after this one - a lot of things will be going. I look forward to seeing how everyone does.

  18. lol I just finished our bedrooms, entry, kitchen and living room last month. I love getting rid of things. I wasn't always like that though, not until our first long distance move and I was able to fully appreciate having less stuff! I haven't looked back, and it's been 5 years now! The trick I learned from my parents, (who were helping me pack) was to not think too much about it. One of them would ask, do you use this? then the other would ask do you need it/love it/have a use for it later on? (depending on my answer to the first one. And we kept the garbage bags and donate boxes close by, once they were full they were removed to avoid the temptation of going through them one more time. lol It was hard, but when it came to having to unpack in my third trimester, I was sooooooo grateful!
I'll go back through the rooms again though, who knows maybe there is something I overlooked. lol I love your challenges!

  19. I'm IN! I have a household of 9 pack rats and then there's me! I have a friend who said her husband never met a piece of paper he didn't love, and I can DEFINITELY say that about my family!

We are in the middle of spring cleaning, so I'm UP for this challenge!!

  20. I'm in! Purging takes time and the time has to be right. I recently got rid of a lot of stuff and quite a few books (more than 50). I still held on to some but today, the urge to do more hit and so my husband and I went with it. A huge IKEA bag and a big plastic tub are loaded to go to the local hospital for patient libraries.

I love the spirit of your purge. :-)

  21. I would love to get my husband on board with this, but that might be a bit ambitious. :) I have just recently been reading about simplifying my life, and this is JUST PERFECT TIMING. Can't wait!

  22. This is perfect for me right now Jen! We are planning to put our house on the market soon & decluttering/purging my whole house is obviously on the to do list! Thanks for all your hard work I totally heart your blog!

  23. i do NOT have a problem throwing things out and i think this is a great challenge! i'm excited :)

  24. I wrote a blog post on purging. I love the feeling of having lifted weight of unused clutter. http://lofteeideas.blogspot.com/2011/01/purging-my-thoughts-day-3-12-of.html I live with a packrat and we have a ridiculous amount of storage space on our property so he doesn't think we need to get rid of it. My 30 items will either be obvious trash or going in yard sale boxes.

  25. I'M IN!!! I have already started this challenge actually, but I have more to go and I will do my best to get this challenge done this month. Lovin' this Jen!!! I already have stuff for our garage sale for this year, if it doesn't sell then I will donate. I threw out a lot of stuff that just needed to be throw out. Old medicine, old make-up. Recycled paper, shredded what needed to be shredded and recycled any plastic that was garbage. I'm excited about getting rid of more. Great challenge Jen!!!

  26. I am SO in...last week I tackled our guest room which had become storage for all things without a home...5 bags later I felt SO much better. Can't wait to de-clutter and simplify the rest of our home!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Over at declutter daily, we're doing 365 in 365. I'll obviously be doing this anyway, but would love to see how it's going for others too, so I'm in!

  28. I am SO excited I found your blog in February! I've been wanting to purge and organize things for SO long, and it's great to make (even more) headway on it with a plan for each month. Of course, I get some things done ahead of plan and others (like the photo organizing) is taking a WHILE (I have TONS of negatives to go through, and my mom let me borrow her negative scanner so I don't have to take all my things to like Walgreen's). I've been digging out all the boxes I just tossed stuff into when we moved back in October, and I can't wait to get it all sorted, purged, and organized. I HATE not being able to find something, like you, and it will feel AMAZING when it is all done! :) Craft supplies, photos, negatives, filing paperwork/bills, kids artwork, kids schoolwork, and memories like the Navy and our Wedding Day, etc. Thanks for a great organizing blog, and adorable templates!

  31. Hi Jen! I so want to do this, but I've honestly organized so much over the last year that there isn't much to toss in my house! I'll have to see what I can come up with. :) I wrote a post a while back on my tips for getting and staying organized that you can feel free to share with your readers. It addresses this very thing -- letting go!

    Have a great week!

  32. So excited for this! Usually I get in a mood and go through the house and have no mercy with things to toss or donate. Unfortunately, I JUST went through one of these phases, but I'm up for a challenge. :)

  33. I'm in the process of doing a 101 things in 101 days challenge on my blog.
It's not Spring here in Australia but the weather is just as beautiful and I decided I wanted to tackle my Master To Do List in the 101 days I had left of my pregnancy.
I'm off to a great start and have already managed to achieve over 40 things in less than 25 days.
If you don't mind I'd love to link my April results to your challenge.

  34. I'm moving in a month so I am definitely doing this! :)

  35. I am in! We don't have our printer unpacked yet so I couldn't do last month's challenge with you, but I have your awesome freebies saved for when I can print them out. We need to downsize our stuff by um A LOT! I've trashed/donated about 200lbs of clothes so far but we have a lot more to do. All our things from our parents' homes was shipped to us in our move so we are going through things all the way back to junior high school! lol

  36. We purge on a regular basis, but I'm gonna see what else we can absolutely live without! Success to everyone this month on their task!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Trust me..my garbage can isn't big enough :)
I'm totally in for this challange!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Im so in! I'm already doing the 40 days, 40 bags challenge that is floating around the internet, but I seem to have lost interest, but this should get me back in gear, especially since some of the areas I've found that need love are in my living room, thanks for the kick start!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm in! I need to declutter. When we lived in a small apartment I kept clutter to a minimum, now that we are in the house I have so much junk.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm really looking forward to this! I've been letting several organizing projects pile up (yes, I'm an unorganized procrastinator- yikes!), but this one seems so simple. I'm getting ready for a yard sale at the end of the month, so the timing couldn't be any more perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm in! We just moved and it seems like the move that has taken me the longest to get everything settled. We have been in the house over three weeks and we have yet to see the top of the kitchen bar. Can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Perfect timing! My husband and I have been attempting to do this at our own pace and spent Saturday night cleaning out all our kitchen cabinets and adding new shelving in them.

The result? Over 40 items gone, nicely organized space, a toaster we returned to its natural color, and 3 empty cabinets. I'm loving the potential of this project!

  43. This is PERFECT timing--I just took a box of books to Half Price Books (and made a whopping nine bucks, woo-hoo!), and St. Vincent DePaul is doing a used clothes pick-up on our street this Thursday!
